Pay Now – Eat Later!
It may not be an idea which you find easy to swallow, but the latest news on the London restaurant scene is that a new ‘pay-before-you-eat’ initiative could well be the biggest thing to hit the food industry since, well….sliced bread!
A new reservation system called Bookingrid is being considered in restaurants across the capital, and much like you may find with flights, hotels or package holidays, the earlier you book, and pay for your meals, the less you’ll pay.
The great thing about this system is that if you know well in advance that you want to eat in one of London’s best restaurants, you should find it a whole lot easier to secure yourself a table and you’ll pay less for your food too.
The Bookingrid system would require you to simply call up, pay a non-refundable deposit, (probably the amount of an average spend per head for the given restaurant), and then just turn up on the night, eat your meal and go.
Obviously the restaurants will still have the ability to charge if you overspend on your deposit, and tips would be additional, but it does give customers the ability to pay for their meals well in advance, then on the night just turn up, relax, and enjoy their meal without having to worry about the costs at the end of the night.
Of course, this new initiative isn’t all one long dessert trolley. At the end of the day it does seem appear to do more good for the restaurants than it will for consumers and there is plenty of potential to be left with a bitter taste in your mouth.
Firstly, the deposit is non-refundable. If you book a posh table in one of London’s top restaurants in October and then find that when the big night rolls around in December, you’re laid up in bed with a cold, there’s little you could do to get your money back. The restaurant would still have your cake and you wouldn’t have eaten it!
Next up are the issues around poor quality food and service. At the moment, we pay for our food after we’ve eaten it and that leaves the balance of power with the consumer. If we are delivered low-quality food, or there’s some major problem with the standard of service, we can complain and keep our money in our pocket. When you’ve paid in advance, the dough ball is most definitely back in the court of the restaurant owners and not only may you struggle to get refunds for bad experiences, restaurants may actually suffer through the complacency of knowing they have your money before you even walk through the door. Is it inevitable there’ll be a drop in standards?
Backers of the scheme have pointed out that whilst refunds for not being able to make it on the night will not be given, the dedicated website will allow you to sell your table to other interested parties.
It’s certainly a very interesting scheme and it’s made us hungry just thinking about it!
All things considered it will give both locals and visitors to London the chance to save money on their meals by booking in advance, so there most be some good in that.
Of course here at London Chauffeur UK, you don’t have to worry about paying your money and being given a poor quality service.
